Is it ok to mix two types of cat food? To give your cat a well rounded diet?
I want my cat to thrive not just survive. Just like people, cats can get bored with the same food day in and day out. Imagine if you had to eat the same kind of cereal for months, or even years, you’d get bored, too!
I am currently feeding Wellness Kitten Health Dry Food and am thinking about mixing that with Nature’s Variety Instinct Dry Cat Food would this be ok. I also feed Merrick Gourmet Canned Cat Food (all varieties).
I feed canned food as her main meal and dry as a supplemental.

I will take issue with the person who is anti-dry food. My cats are living long lives on dry food. And so are many others. And some people’s cats are doing poorly on wet food.
But to the point, if you want to mix, there is really no issue. You might find your cat selects one kibble over the other. Do not mix wet food with dry food however, as it will spoil. And wet food should not be left our for more than several hours.
However, most foods are formulated to be a complete diet. The only change that seems to have been recent is a more organic approach.
The oldest cat I currently have has been eating the same brand of dry food for almost 13 years. She is thriving, to use your words. If they don’t know other foods are out there, and are happy with what they are eating, they are content. And I have had cats that have lived longer than that on a dry food diet.
I feel it is the quality of the food - not so much whether it is wet or dry. Though I am definitely biased toward a wet diet only.
If you are going to feed Whiskies, Friskies, etc. canned I don’t think you are doing your cats any favors.
Nothing wrong with mixing foods. Also, wellness is normally a quality food BUT! I would almost feed any canned foods over dry. You are already feeding quality canned so why the kitty crack????? Health/dry is an oxymoron
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods.
The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth.
