Well everyone has their own opinion. I gave my dog the very very expensive stuff. Her coat started looking horrible she started shedding even worse than she already does and she didn’t like it.
[ I know a lot wont like this but ]
Now I give her Pedigree adult complete nutrition. Her coat is nice and shiny she quit shedding so much. She is perfectly healthy.
Now with my pit its the complete opposite. She has to have the expensive stuff to be healthy. So I think it all depends.
Just use whatever makes your dog “healthier” not what they “like”
My dog goes to the vet once every year and is in perfect health and weight. Its not like “feeding mcdonalds” to your dog if the food is regulated like its supposed to be by weight/age and they exercise they wont have a weight problem. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cf...
That is a link to pictures of my dogs… Perfect health.
He prefers it (initially) because the cheap food has added sugar, salt, and flavor enhancers. They need to add that because if a dog sniffed a bowl of corn, wheat gluten & whatever else is in the cheap brands, he wouldn’t eat it.
Cheaper food can make him fatter. He’ll need to eat more because it doesn’t have the nutrients his body really needs. It could lead to obesity, heart disease, diabetes–every disease people get who eat a poor diet.
Gradually transition the two foods together, feeding less each day of Alpo until you have him on the better brand 100%.
add: Here’s the Alpo ingredients;
Ground Yellow Corn, Beef And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Tallow Preserved With Bha, Animal Digest, Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Added Color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2), Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Carbonate, Brewers Dried Yeast, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Natural Flavor, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K Activity), Folic Acid, Biotin, Sodium Selenite.
It has beef tallow as the 4th ingredient,. It is basically fat and added to give flavor but provides little of the helpful fatty acids (omega-3 & omega-6) that other foods have. The 6th ingredient is salt.
I’d say, ask your vet if it bothers you; but, in my experience, if he likes it and seems to thrive on it, that’s what really matters. I used to have a miniature dachshund who would eat nothing else but friskies cat food, though we tried every available kind of dog food on him. In truth, he much preferred to mooch at table and only took recourse to the cat food after there was no hope of mooching. He lived to be 14 and was always trim, active, alert and healthy. I think that speaks volumes for itself. I would stay clear of cat food, could I manage it, because of the matter of protein/fat levels in cat food, but aside from that. .. . I’d say, what he liked and you could afford would be fine.

Just make sure it has vitamins, protein, etc. I am a furbaby lover for sure, one of mine will not eat anything except pedigree puppy food. It is ok as far as the above is concerned. That same dog will refuse to eat PERIOD if science diet or the other fancy brands are in the bowl. I feel as long as the dog doesn’t have any skin issues and is healthy tummy wise and medically no biggy on the food. Read the back of the dog food you are buying and truly compare it to the fancy foods….Part of the costs believe me is in the commericals and name
Please don’t feed your dog Alpo, it’s crappola. You will pay for in the long run. Our dogs like Canidae and do very well on it. Please switch over to a good food, your aren’t doing your dog a favor feeding him that garbage. If you cannot afford to buy a good quality dog food, you shouldn’t own a dog.
It’s not as good for him. I buy Nutros which is a higher quality food from petco and it doesn’t cost too much more than more common dog food brands. It comes in a lot of different flavors and varieties. Maybe try it if your concerned about your dog getting proper nutrition.
Same reason why most kids prefer candy to vegetables. It’s all about the fillers they use to make it more palatable. The cheaper food is basically junk food. Get him on the good stuff. He may not eat it at first but he won’t starve himself. Once he knows that’s all he gets, he’ll eat it.
It may sound cheaper, but it will take more of it to keep him in shape. Alpo has lots of waste. I would try something a litter better. I like Purina One and Proplan, but Iams, diamond, Eukanuba, Canidae are all good
That’s like eating McDonald’s vs mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup on a cold day.
I’d rather spend the money on a quality kibble than to spend the money on a dog in poor health because I was too cheap to be concerned with his nutrition.
That’s like asking is it ok for him to eat corn dogs everyday because he likes them and they’re cheap. Alpo has almost the same ingredients as corn dogs. Try different flavors of better quality food.
Many people prefer candies and cakes to vegetables and lean meats- does that mean it’s OK to feed your kids the junk they want instead of healthy food? Same concept applies to your dogs.

Its not saving you as much as you think. You have to feed him more of it to meet his nutritional requirements because of the amount of fillers.

Probably will - why don’t you just give him the decent dry mixed with some lean meat or a bit of good canned?
I like junk food better than healthy food too, but it’s not good for me, even if it IS cheaper.
i was gonna say i like junk food more then healthy food too but it doesn’t mean it’s good for me but someone beat me too it
of course it’s ok. I’m sure he would eat even cheaper food, too. My dogs do. They don’t care as long as they eat.
