I would like to find a realtively quiet place in Edmonton that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg. Not necessarily gourmet food but not fast food. We are up for almost any ethnic choice.

in the downtown on the back of scotia bank there is a small restaurant called la table de renoir. He is actually related to the painter so there is a cozy atmosphere in there too with paintings. Food is french, service is good, wine list nice and prices ok. Quiet at night.
Characters — it is downtown, very intimate, and quiet.
For quiet Italian I would suggest Shecky’s on 75 street and Argyle road. It’s in the strip mall between Boston Pizza and Enterprise car rentals. At lunch the place is packed but in the evening not so much. We have found the prices reasonable and the food is good.
For quiet Ethiopian I would suggest the Merbrat Cafe on 107 ave (south side of the street) between 106 street and 107 street. The decor is not much to write home about but the food is authentic and cheap. Merbrat is the owner, she is a genuinely good soul and will gladly offer you advice on the menu if you are unsure.
Take a look in the “SEE Magazine” for restaurant reviews as well.
