I’m doing a bit of research for a fantasy story I’m writing and a good chunk of it happens in the middle of a desert (think the Sahara desert and whatnot).
So, to make my fiction as believable as possible, I’d like examples of what people actually eat in the desert as a reference. I need examples of both survival and gourmet foods eaten in the desert.
Thanks for the help!

Roasted scorpions.
scorpion , snake , and ….. if bad goes to worse …other people , but stay away from the short dark smelly ones .
I have only ever eaten one meal out in the desert and that was roasted goat, and that was special. It’s a start I suppose. Common ingredients are taboulleh, rice, beans (foul, pronounced fool, not horrible, delicious made with broad beans. ), spices and veg such as onions and tomatoes. This was in Egypt years ago. We also ate stuffed pigeons and omlettes. Sometimes they hard boil eggs for hours and then crumble them on food. Flat bread. Sheep and goat’s cheese. Very little salad and green vegetables.
Good luck with your writing, I love your attention to detail, it is so important for really re creating an environment.
I would think things like Indian dishes (curries), Moroccan and Egyptian like couscous and candied figs. Lamb kebabs…
