the best diet for any cat is one that mimics his natural prey - rodents. That is either a raw diet or canned food that is high in protein and low in carbs.
I don’t know any brands for the UK off the top of my head, but check out http://www.catinfo.org it is a website run by a vet who has studied feline nutrition, and has helped many a cat lose weight by getting them on a species appropriate diet.

Well maybe just cutting his food down to one specific brand. Usually feeding any animal (especially cats or dogs) different brands for a long time can mess up their digestive system. I feed my cats Purina. Also, don’t put food in his dish just because it’s empty. I feed my cats a little in the morning and at night before I go to sleep. There’s usually still some food in the dish before night comes around. Just ration his food and make sure he gets exercise. Fat doesn’t go down just because you eat less. If he’s neutered, let him run around outside for a while. But neutered cats also get really lazy and gain weight. It’s just how they are. Dogs do it too

try a good quality wet cat food and give him more exercise i used to put my cat out the front door so the lazy so and so had to walk round the back to get back in again otherwise he go out the flap do his toilet then come straight back in again.
now that he’s lost a bit of extra weight i feed my cats almo nature wet and they also have it with dry food in a seperate bowl to nibble on during the day, they eat 2 tins a day and not so much of the dry.
with whiskers and felix your just feeding lumps with gravy/jelly whereas with almo nature its proper chunks of meat or fish some even have sliced hard boiled egg in them. and there is also a better meat content

The premium cat foods are best because you don’t have to give him as much to meet his nutritional needs. I’m not sure what brands are available in the UK, but brands like Wellness, Petguard and Triumph are best. Avoid foods with meals and byproducts and feed him canned food, not dry (it’s lower in calories). The link gives more details about what to look for and what to avoid. Hope it helps.

go to your vets, and ask for a weight check for your cat, they will then be able to reccommend a food to help him lose weight, and tell u how much to feed etc. 1 pouch a day isnt very much, your cat might be going elsewhere for food ie stealing from other houses, if he is hungry. if he is over 7 yrs, you could also try a senior food as these are lower in calories.

Most veterinary practices have a nurse who is qualified in all aspects of animal care, including obesity in pets.
Why not have a word with her/him; they should be able to recommend a food and a regime.
One of mine will sell her little black soul for Aldi pouches, one will only eat Iams biscuits and the third will eat anything she can get her greedy little paws on! Trying to limit her, without denying the other two, is a full-time job!!
